The debate on the use of arable land and its impact on the environment has intensified within primary food production and the food producing industry. As a result, the focus has shifted to exploring alternative protein sources and more sustainable food options. Of these alternatives, microalgae stand out as particularly promising, offering both sustainability gains and health benefits. Overcoming previous challenges, Phycom has successfully developed an economically viable and scalable production method for high-quality microalgae, marking a major breakthrough in the industry.

Juri van Dolderen, ROM Utrecht Region: “ ROM Utrecht Region invests in companies that make the world of tomorrow a better place. Phycom and its microalgae fit perfectly together, because microalgae are a crucial element in the protein transition. Phycom could be a game-changer for the sector and significantly reduce the food industry’s massive footprint. The ROM is proud to contribute to this important development. ”

Marco Verloop, councilor for the municipality of Veenendaal, with the portfolio of finance, economy and sustainability, adds: “ In the environmental vision of Veenendaal, we strive for a healthy, sustainable and safe Veenendaal. We are also continuously working on improving our location policy, business climate and employer services. The ROM’s investment in Phycom fits within these ambitions and we warmly welcome it. ”

The algae creators

Since its start in 2008, Phycom’s mission has been to improve and strengthen the availability and quality of food for humans and animals. Enter microalgae as an important food source. The Phycom team has built two production facilities in Veenendaal over the past four years, proving the technology and scalability of microalgae production, with which it is already selling its products on the market. This additional capital injection will optimize the technology and scale up the production and sales of microalgae.

Phycom’s CFO Willem Kuijsten; “This additional financing from ROM Utrecht Region further strengthens our confidence in the potential of our company and our algae products. It paves the way for further strengthening our proposition, organizational growth and go-to-market strategy.”
